Small Art, Big Hearts @ Waddington’s, to raise $$ for LGBT charities in Orlando & Toronto

Two days after the horrific June 12th shooting in Pulse nightclub in Orlando, I put out a call on Facebook to my artist-friends to donate a small work of art to raise money for the survivors and family members of the attack. Within a day, my post was forwarded dozens of times and over 100 artists committed themselves to offering a work of art! Everyone wanted to do something.
Panic struck as I then worried where everything could be shown quickly and in sync with Toronto Pride. I called a number of venues in Toronto but never got beyond leaving messages. I then called my friends at Waddingtons Auctioneers & Appraisers to see if they may know someone, somewhere. A few hours later the staff at Waddington’s called me back to say they’d love to host the exhibition. A day after that, Small Art Big Hearts was born. It was that fast!
SABH will now include over 100 works of original artwork including paintings (acrylic, encaustic, mixed-media and oil), photography, sculpture and jewellery created by Toronto and surrounding GTA artists. There will also be a few items kindly donated by Waddingtons itself. Everything is modest in size, 12″ or smaller.
All artwork will be available for public viewing in Waddingtons’ main showroom this Thursday, June 23rd from 10-5 and Friday, June 24th 10-1; there will be a public viewing reception this Thursday night, from 6-8pm. All 100+ lots of art will be auctioned online, starting this Friday thru next Tuesday, June 28th.
All artwork will be sold online, with starting bids of $50. The contributing artists are people I’ve known from over the years, were kind enough to work with me in MJG Gallery or simply responded to my call on Facebook.
My wish is that should enough money be raised, several Toronto-based, LGBTQ charities will additionally benefit from this sale. Waddingtons is additionally waiving their usual 20% buyer’s premium!
